Research chemical handling
This page summarizes points from one official source, the OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.1450, Occupational exposure to hazardous chemicals in laboratories. It is not a complete safety program. Read the standard itself and your institution rules.
- Scope (a)(1): the standard applies to employers engaged in the laboratory use of hazardous chemicals.
- Chemical Hygiene Plan (e): a written plan, reviewed at least annually, that includes criteria for control measures such as personal protective equipment and hygiene practices.
- Information and training (f): employees receive information and training on the hazards in their work area at initial assignment and before new exposure situations.
- Labels (h)(1)(i): labels on incoming containers of hazardous chemicals are not removed or defaced.
- Safety Data Sheets (h)(1)(ii): received SDSs are kept and readily accessible to laboratory employees.
Not for human or animal use. See the research use policy and Reading a peptide label.
